Posted on November 3rd, 2009 2 comments
The 4th of the demos we’ve organised from resource discovery system suppliers takes place on Friday November 6th at 10:30, when Innovative Interfaces will be talking about their Encore platform, together with their federated search tool ResearchPro.For examples of Encore sites, see University of Glasgow library’s page ; and also University of Lincoln, Nebraska.
Please come and join us for more tea, coffeee, biscuits and another peek at what resource discovery for our students might look like in the future.

A lot of stuff about the company and how amazing it is that frankly I could have done without.
The product was really busy and cluttered, even if it did incorporate features that others had (e.g. results showing as the search was continued, so you didn’t have to wait for everything to finish before you saw you had 50,000 results from cross searching; being able to select the resources you want to search and to exclude others. (I’ll leave comments on indexing for others to make) -
I liked the fact that Innovative came across as recognising that their product range was in transition – moving from pre-built connectors towards an XML gateway solution. They still rely on ResearchPro as a separate product to provide those federated search connectors, and seemed more cautious/realistic about which publishers they had managed to get on board so far to allow for harvesting of metadata.
It was also refreshing that they were not tied to a large publishing company or provider and to that extent were independent.(unlike a certain subscription agent I could mention that are apparently funded by venture capital!) They were upfront about maintaining a degree of control over product releases right from the start which I liked too.
